Objective of the department
FCI was set up in 1965 under an act  Parliament to fulfill the following objectives of Food Policy of the Govt. of India:
1. Effective price support operations for safeguarding the interest of the farmers.
2. Distribution of food grains throughout the country for PDS and other Govt. Schemes.
3. To maintain satisfactory level of operational/ buffer stocks of food grains to ensure the national food security.

Current Year Action PLan
At Hazaribag, FCI is issuing food grains to State Govt. through Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) godown. At present the storage capacity of CWCC godowns is 6500MT.

Any other remarkable achievement
1. During Rabi 1999, FCI and other state agencies made a record wheat procurement of 141.43 Lakh MTs by purchases from the farmers under price support operations in the ongoing Rabi season of 2000-2001. The FCI and other Govt. agencies has already procured 108.50 Lac Tonnes as on 3.5.2000

2. Similarly during current Kharif season, the FCI and state agencies already procured about 90.5 lakh MTs of paddy under price support operations in addition to about 86.3 Lakh MTs of levy rice against about 99.9 Lakh MTs of rice procured during corresponding period of last year. At this rate the rice procurement during current Kharif season may cross 150 lakh tones against 118 lakh MTs of rice procured during last year.
