The
district is well served by a network of good roads. It
has National Highways, State Highways and roads managed
by the Zila Parishad. Quite a few roads come under the
Hazaribag Mines Board, Forest Department and some small
roads are managed by the Damodar Valley Corporation. The
Grand Trunk Road (National Highway No.2) covers some
important places such as Hazaribag and Barhi. The Barhi-Hazaribag-Ranchi
road is a part of N.H. 33 and the Barhi-Rajouli road is
a part of N.H. 31. Even
unmettalled graveled roads are open to vehicular traffic
throughout the year except on unabridged sections during
the rains.Intra state and inter state buses ply
regularly on the roads. Thus the district is well
connected to other districts of the state as well as to
adjoining states of U.P., M.P., West Bengal and Orissa.
The district headquarters at Hazaribag is not directly
connected by the rail. The nearest railway station from
this town is Hazaribag Road situated at a distance of
about 69 Kms. Other important places in district, viz.,
Patratu and Ramgarh are, however, on the rail head.
Ranchi –Koderma railway line is currently under
construction.River ways are not common in the district.
Most of the rivers are shallow. Generally, they dry in
summer though they are in high floods during the
monsoon. For these reasons, there is not much of river
traffic in the district. There is a fair weather landing
air-strip for small planes at Hazaribag, the district
headquarters.

For
road safety, road signal and road lighting has been and
is being installed. Keeping in view the exponential
increase in vehicular traffic, widening of roads is
envisaged. The total length of pucca road within
municipality area is 45 km while that of kutcha road is
168 km. Due to extensive road network within the
district and especially the NH 33 which passes through
it, the number of accidents has been on an upward swing.
The preponderance of heavy vehicular traffic has
resulted in an increase in mortality and morbidity
associated with motor vehicle accidents.
